          Ryo Toyonaga’s recent survey curated by Midori Yamamura and designed by Yumi Kori at the Vilcek Foundation in New York City (March 12-May 15, 2009) summarized nearly twenty years of work in ceramics and other media.

          Toyonaga, I figured, surely must have been inspired by the atomic monsters that waddled through the cities and fields of those old TV shows.

          What can we gain from such an approach? Building on over 300 handbuilt, carved, and unglazed stoneware sculptures made between 1987 and 2003, Toyonaga’s subsequent art is inesca
