Agota Kristof was born in the Hungarian village of Csikvánd.

In 1956, following the suppression of the anti-communist uprising in Hungary, she fled to Switzerland and settled in the city of Neuchâtel. Until 1961, she worked as a factory worker.
Literary Career
Kristof began writing in French, a language she had mastered later in life.
In 1986, her debut novel, "The Notebook," gained critical acclaim. The novel delved into the lives of two brothers during World War II, who aspire to become superhuman. The book received the prestigious "Lauréat de la Francophonie" award.
