As the third of five children born to Robert James, The Honorable, and Susanna Orr-Ewing, nee Bodley Scott, Alice grew up in a family with a rich political heritage, including Conservative MP Sir Archibald Orr-Ewing and his son Charles Lindsay Orr-Ewing.

Her grandfather, Charles Ian Orr-Ewing, was a Baron, life peer, and decorated veteran of World War II who played a pivotal role in the development of the first mass-produced television.

Alice received her secondary education at Heathfield School, where she followed in the footsteps of artist Eileen Agar, actress Sienna Miller, Princess Alexandra of Kent, and Tiggy Legg-Bourke.
