Taylor & Francis Group. All rights reserved. Arnold Dallimore, a Canadian Baptist pastor, made his name through publishing a major two-volume biography, in 1970 and 1980, of the transatlantic revivalist George Whitefield.
It was the labour of 30 years, widely applauded by an eager Calvinist readership, the first major study of Whitefield since Luke Tyerman’s two volumes in the mid-1870s a century earlier.

Dallimore was a Baptist pastor for thirty-eight years and a successful biographer of Christian leaders.All historians of the eighteenth-century revivals, whether or not they approved of Dallimore’s style, had to reckon with his magnum opus. It was followed by shorter biographies of Edward Irving, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Charles Wesley and Susanna Wesley.1 This chapter assesses Dallimore’s contribution to evangelical historiography, especially the ways in which his Reformed soteriology and pastoral instinct shaped his narratives.
